Kids love 'em.
(We must acquire that aversion to greens.)
That precious face is my younger grandson Harrison… and today is his first birthday!
Unlike his older brother, Harrison is not what you would call a picky eater. In fact, he's a little omnivore! He never met a foodstuff he didn't like.
Of course, fanatic that I am, I've plied both my little darlings with green smoothies. (Oh, Erin knows about it… she drinks them as well.) I've steered clear of citrus and strawberries when Harrison was younger, but I honestly couldn't resist using them as little guinea pigs.
I knew all that green goodness would be terrific for them—organic, freshly blended. I just wasn't sure about their reaction to the taste. (Both of my older sons still refuse even the mildest green smoothie… and they have actually tasted them. Verdict: 'Yuck!')
Remember that vintage TV commercial? 'Let's get Mikey to try it. He hates everything… he likes it!' That's Harrison and a green smoothie. He clamors for more. (Fortunately, he's very adept with a straw.)
Just the other day, Harrison and William slurped up about 10 ounces each of a smoothie I'd whizzed up with really deep green kale! (The Boutenkos call it Dinosaur Kale. Central Market offers it as Lacinato Kale. And Ruth Rogers and the late Rose Gray of The River Cafe in London called it Cavalo Nero… which is how I think of it. So melodic.)
Anyway, here's my conclusion based on this sampling of two teeny tots: we acquire that aversion to greens. Most likely it's because we fall into the trap of eating way too much processed food, which makes our bodies go all acidic and so green smoothies just don't taste good to us.
All the more reason to start off right with green smoothies before we're old enough to say 'Yuck'!
